Why fiber matters on a GLP-1
Draft. Nobody qualified to review health content has checked this explainer yet.
Fiber is what most adults are already short of, and the first answer to constipation on a GLP-1. The plans build every week around it.
A GLP-1 medicine slows the stomach and quietens appetite. That is how it works, and it is also why fiber is the first thing worth protecting when portions shrink: it is the nutrient most adults were already short of, and the one that answers the side effect people mention most.
What fiber does
Fiber is the part of plant foods the body does not digest. It adds bulk, slows the rise in blood sugar after a meal, feeds the bacteria in the gut and keeps the bowel moving. Most adults in the United States get about 15 grams a day, against a recommendation of at least 25 to 35 grams.
Why it matters more on a GLP-1
- Constipation is common on these medicines. Slower digestion is part of how they work. More fiber, with more fluid, is the first thing to change.
- Smaller portions make it easy to fall short. The target was already a stretch at a normal appetite. Halve the plate and it is further away.
- Fiber keeps a small meal satisfying. Fiber-rich foods are filling for the calories they carry, which matters when the day has fewer of them.
How much
Aim for at least 25 grams a day, and build up to it over a week or two rather than all at once. Increasing fiber too quickly causes gas, bloating and cramps, which on a GLP-1 are easy to mistake for the medicine. Drink more water as you add fiber: without the fluid, extra fiber can make constipation worse rather than better.
Where it comes from in the plans
The lunches and dinners in the weekly plans are built around it: beans in the chili and the black-bean bowl, chickpeas in the curry and the couscous bowl, red lentils in the dal, and vegetables alongside. Whole grains such as wholewheat pasta and oats, fruit eaten whole rather than as juice, and nuts carry the rest of the day.
When to ask for help
Constipation that lasts more than a few days despite fiber and fluids, or that comes with pain, is something to raise with your prescriber or pharmacist rather than push through with more fiber.

- Why protein matters on a GLP-1
Some of the weight lost on a GLP-1 is muscle. Protein at every meal, with a little resistance exercise, is how you keep it. Every lunch is built around one.
